A few ideas to put that blank journal to use 📔✍️

Hey Reader!

If you're anything like me, you probably have at least one blank notebook lying around somewhere. Maybe it's a cheap composition notebook or maybe it's a leather-bound journal with gorgeous, creamy paper. Either way, you bought it and set it on your shelf waiting for the perfect time.

Now is that time 💪

Thankfully, there are a MILLION things you can do with your empty journal.

Here are just a few ideas:

  1. Take notes for all your recipe attempts so you can improve next time you make a dish.
  2. Plan out your dream vacation so you have all your research done when the lock downs lift.
  3. Create a dream journal and keep track of all of those fun dreams and maybe even learn a little bit about yourself in the process.
  4. Draw out your garden plan, record planting and watering dates, and track your garden's growth.

Check out all 30 ideas for your blank notebook here!

I know it's tempting to keep hoarding all your beautiful journals for the right time.

You want to use them for something special -- I get it!

But life is short.

There is no time like the present.

Anything special you have set aside -- bath bombs, candles, a particularly luxurious pair of socks (hey, I don't judge) -- right now is the time to bust them out and do something kind for yourself.

So if you're nervous about using a journal that you've been saving and you need someone to tell you that it's okay, then consider this your permission slip. Write, draw, letter, record, scrapbook, and doodle to your heart's content.

Allow yourself to make imperfect pages and be nice to yourself. You deserve it 🥰

Cheers,

Making art doesn't have to be hard, Reader. You don't always need to plan an elaborate piece, or have a theme -- or even what materials to use. Sometimes it's as easy as sitting down, picking up whatever pen you have lying around, and making a few messy marks. Just the other day, I was feeling overwhelmed and sat down in a huff at my desk in front of an open sketchbook. I grabbed the sharpie pen that was within reach and started squiggling all over the page without any thought or plan. I...

Hello Reader! I'm coming at you with something new -- a newsletter, to be exact! I've wanted to do a monthly newsletter for years, but I didn't really know where to begin. It wasn't until recently that I saw Peggy's newsletter (of The Pigeon Letters fame) that I was inspired to give it a try. So here we are! I want to use this monthly newsletter to connect with you on a more human-to-human level. You can expect this to be a place where I share all the nonsense that tickles my fancy as well as...

Reader, do you ever have it where you draw one beautiful, perfect eye, but the second one always ends up weird? Or do your characters always end up looking stiff and unnatural? I used to struggle with this all. the. time. My go-to drawing workflow always started with the eyes, then the rest of the face, then the body, one limb at a time. I thought this was THE way to draw people and faces, so I clung to it for years. Flipping through my old sketchbooks, I see it everywhere -- half-done faces...
