You never know what might up and change your life…

Sometimes, while I’m typing away in my art studio or casually swapping out camera lenses, I get hit with it – the sudden realization that this is my life.

I get to do this for a living; making art, chasing my passions, and teaching the most incredible community of people on the internet.

What on earth led me here?

There are a few different factors that influenced this weird, colorful career path, but I can point to one in particular that played a big part: lettering.

Surprising, huh? It certainly was for me.

My lettering journey began with a simple desire: injecting bits of creativity into my daily routine by beautifying my bullet journal. Lettering, with its accessibility, beauty, and practicality, seemed like the perfect fit. At that point in my life, I had never gotten any particular hobby or craft to really stick around.

But lettering? Yeah. It stuck.

I was delighted that, for the first time in my life, I actually managed to hold on to a hobby for more than a few months. I loved the process of lettering, even though I wasn’t particularly good at it. It just felt nice.

But here's something I didn't expect: lettering became more than just a hobby.

I had no idea that all that time spent pouring that passion and creativity into my planner would result in more than pretty pages – it would shape me into the person I am today.

Crazy, right? I spent YEARS feeling guilty for stealing bits of time to chase those butterflies. I’m still occasionally hounded by the guilt fairy when I spend a long time on a piece of art. But to my surprise, all those moments of joy didn’t just fill hours – they charted the course of my future.

Investing time in lettering isn't merely about learning a new skill; it's about unlocking parts of yourself you never knew existed. It’s about finding an inner voice that wants to be heard.

You might think, "It's just lettering. How much can it really affect me?"

But trust me, don't sell yourself short. The ripple effects of nurturing your creative passions can be monumental, and it can happen to you.

Imagine where you could be a year from now – selling your lettered art online, perhaps, or being hired for your exquisite script. Imagine what might happen if you did more than dip your toes, but jumped in with both feet.

When was the last time you truly embraced your passions, let your hair down, and explored what you love without reservations? Without guilt?

Lettering was a huge part of my journey, and I know it can be that for you, too.

I wanted to create a resource for you that would provide you with a beacon, a guiding light, so you can navigate the long, often frustrating journey of piecing it all together on your own. I want you to enjoy the benefits of a lettering practice without suffering through all the uncomfortable hiccups I endured on my way here.

That is why I created the Modern Lettering Academy.

Making art doesn't have to be hard, Reader. You don't always need to plan an elaborate piece, or have a theme -- or even what materials to use. Sometimes it's as easy as sitting down, picking up whatever pen you have lying around, and making a few messy marks. Just the other day, I was feeling overwhelmed and sat down in a huff at my desk in front of an open sketchbook. I grabbed the sharpie pen that was within reach and started squiggling all over the page without any thought or plan. I...

Hello Reader! I'm coming at you with something new -- a newsletter, to be exact! I've wanted to do a monthly newsletter for years, but I didn't really know where to begin. It wasn't until recently that I saw Peggy's newsletter (of The Pigeon Letters fame) that I was inspired to give it a try. So here we are! I want to use this monthly newsletter to connect with you on a more human-to-human level. You can expect this to be a place where I share all the nonsense that tickles my fancy as well as...

Reader, do you ever have it where you draw one beautiful, perfect eye, but the second one always ends up weird? Or do your characters always end up looking stiff and unnatural? I used to struggle with this all. the. time. My go-to drawing workflow always started with the eyes, then the rest of the face, then the body, one limb at a time. I thought this was THE way to draw people and faces, so I clung to it for years. Flipping through my old sketchbooks, I see it everywhere -- half-done faces...
